How an app earns the award

  1. Tested on real phones

Installed on a mid-range Android phone and an iPhone, then used every day for a full week.

  2. Scored on four criteria

Design, usefulness, privacy and value, each out of 10, make the award score in the ring.

  3. Checked for privacy

We read the permissions and data labels and watch what the app sends while we use it.

  4. Re-tested every season

Scores move when big updates land, so an award has to be earned again next year.
